Efficient watering for high-value crops
Horticulture crops perform best with close, uniform wetting. Drip lines with correct emitter spacing and stable pressure deliver consistent yields while saving water.
Emitter spacing examples
- Tomatoes: 20–30 cm between emitters (double-line layouts common)
- Leafy greens: 15–25 cm for frequent wetting and shallow roots
- Onions/shallots: 20–30 cm depending on bed width
Key recommendations
- Use pressure-compensating emitters for long runs or slopes
- Zone by crop type and bed length to match run times
- Filter water carefully to avoid emitter clogging
- Check pressure at the farthest emitter during commissioning
Bed layouts
Plan laterals along beds with emitters placed to match crop rows. Raised beds may need split laterals for even distribution.
Flow considerations
Calculate flow per bed based on emitter rate and number of emitters to size mainlines and pump capacity correctly.
Maintenance
Flush laterals, clean filters and inspect emitters frequently during the season to avoid uneven watering.
